Oh the joy of comfort food
There's nothing like a trip to childhood to recall a taste that was such a part of living. Tonight, after a very hard day of one challenge after another, I took a wee little visit to a past of summer days, and hearing the tinkling bell of the Good Humor ice cream truck. I had two ice cream pops that I got in those days, one was an orange creamsicle, and the other was a strawberry ice cream pop with chocolate coating. I'm almost melting at the thought of them both now. I had a few happy moments tonight when I discovered the Dairy Queen has a new blizzard, strawberry with chocolate chunks.
Merciful heavens, every spoonful transported me through the years to the summer of 1964, all us kids hanging out and running for the truck and getting my favorite ice cream in the world. Everything was my favorite in the world back then - the world giving my favorite things so much more meaning, as if life couldn't exist without it. With each spoonful, I could smell the smells of summer, of grass, of salt air, the fresh scent of Breck shampoo in my hair after showering off the salt water. The elastic in my sun blouse top and the turquoise shorts. Bare feet that ran everywhere and through the grass up the small hill, thick lush grass and the cool feel of it on my feet. Sitting in the grass, laughing, eating the ice cream pop ever so slowly to savor every bit of flavor.
